ALPINE TRAINING FOCUS

The DWSC Alpine Team will focus on the following three (3) ski racing disciplines throughout the season.

SLALOM

The course is carefully designed to test the skill, timing, and judgment of competitors. The gates are placed in varying combinations, and it demands great skill to achieve the best line of approach and exit with the different combinations. A skier who misses a gate is disqualified. This is the only event that allows hiking to make a gate. The gates are a single hinged pole  6-11 meters apart with combinations  about  4-6 meters apart. Quick turns and athleticism are rewarded in this event.

GS (Giant Slalom)

The giant slalom has characteristics of both the slalom and the downhill. Giant slalom gates are wider and set farther apart than Slalom and the course is longer. The gates are 15-25 meters (50-72ft) apart. Panels on two hinged gates are used in this event for better depth perception at  higher speeds. Good turn shape and active movements are rewarded in this event.

Super-G (Super Giant Slalom)

Super-G skiing combines the elements of downhill and giant slalom. The length of the course is shorter than in downhill where the athlete completes one run while navigating the gates that serve as obstacles. It focuses more on turning and technique with the tuck position being the most used in this race. Distances between turns range from 22-32m (72-105ft). Inspection and execution of line is key in this event because there are no training runs and the speeds are high with less rhythm.

VOLUNTEER DEPOSIT

The DWSC relies on hundreds of parent volunteer hours to operate annually. Volunteering is a great way to meet other families and learn about your child's sport.  Home races, camps, fundraisers, team media, building courses for freestyle, and club maintenance/operation are all great opportunities for parents to contribute to the team.

Alpine and Freestyle teams require significant volunteer support (or paid staff).  These teams have instituted a required $200 volunteer work deposit that is fully refundable at the end of season (April 2023)  after the completion of a  minimum of two (2) dibs sessions (detailed below) at the end of season.

SportsEngine dibs will be the vehicle for signing up for volunteer opportunities and tracking fulfillment.  These credits can be fulfilled by a parent, family member or friend on behalf of the family.  Each dib credit is approximately 3-6 hours, depending on the work item.   Accounts will be reconciled at the end of the season and refunds will be available in April 2023.  If you wish to simply donate your tax deductible work deposit at the end of the season, this is also an option.

Families in Freeride and Gromlins are encouraged to volunteer, even though a payment policy is not required for these teams.  You will still have the option to select dibs within SportsEngine, as well as to reach out directly to coaches or directors to volunteer.

The Volunteer Coordinator is Sarah Morgan.  If you have any questions or concerns, you can reach out to her directly at the contact below.
